Created during André Prinsloo's time in the South African National Defence Force's Sculpture Department, this bronze memorial of three half-life-size paratroopers commemorates the 1st Parachute Battalion at its base in Bloemfontein. The work is one of several military sculptures Prinsloo produced in the mid-1980s, a period in which he also helped develop a bronze foundry for the SANDF to cast its own trophies, busts and memorials. The paratrooper grouping reflects his early command of figurative monument-making and the disciplined realism it required.
