ANDRÉ PUBLIC SCULPTURES

Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, 1956

National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Fine Arts - 1979 under sculptor Phil Kolbé and ceramicist Hylton Nel specializing in terra-cotta sculpture (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University)



He has worked in the Sculpture Department of the SANDF for a period of six years. Thereafter he was employed by the University of Pretoria, first as a Technical assistant and later became a lecturer in the Fine Arts (Sculpture) Department as well as a lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology’s Entertainment Technology (Props Department).

 

Prior to 2012 his career as a sculptor was sporadic, taking part in group exhibitions on average every 4 years whilst working fulltime as either a lecturer or later running a small manufacturing business. Through-out his adult life he has been involved with sculpture or 3D objects in one way or another.

 

As of beginning 2012 he decided to commit himself full time to sculpture. In his own words:  "Once again I’m able to meet and work with like-minded people, sharing ideas, work methodology etc. So far it’s been a fun and an amazing experience. I don’t care much for accolades and such – it’s more about the experience of making sculpture and in a very selfish way pleasing myself. If my work happens to please you it’s an absolute bonus.."

 

His skills as an artist / sculptor includes:

• Drawing

• Terra-cotta

• Bronze casting (investment, sand casting to ceramic shell) including the complete process of fettling, MIG/TIG welding etc

• Mould making (from plaster, fibre-glass to silicon and urethane)

• Clay sculpting (wet & oil)

• Carving Wood (& polystyrene, polyurethane foam)

• Teaching clay modelling & carving

• Studio management
