Standing three metres tall at the Fidel Castro Building in Bloemfontein, this bronze figure of the Cuban revolutionary was created by André Prinsloo in collaboration with a fellow sculptor in 2016. It forms part of a wider body of commemorative work produced through the National Heritage Foundation, alongside Prinsloo's collaborative life-size figure of Castro for the Long March to Freedom project. The sculpture depicts Castro in a formal salute, a gesture that gives the work a direct, statesmanlike character suited to its institutional setting.
