This life-size bronze figure of a soldier was created by André Prinsloo during his time in the South African National Defence Force's Sculpture Department (1983–1986), one of the main sculptures he produced in that period. The work stands in front of the Military Academy in Saldanha Bay, where it serves as a permanent symbol of the soldier's role and the institution's military identity. As an early example of his figurative monument-making, it reflects the disciplined realism and technical command that would later carry through to Prinsloo's public and commemorative sculptures.
