This life-size bronze figure of Nelson Mandela was commissioned in 2018 for the United Nations in New York by South Africa’s Departments of International Relations and Arts and Culture. Created in collaboration with a fellow sculptor and foundry team, the work extends Prinsloo’s long engagement with Mandela’s image from the monumental Union Buildings figure to an international diplomatic setting. It presents Mandela as a symbol of South Africa’s democratic identity and global legacy.
